The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for sustained investment in quality and inclusive education to equip children and youths for national development.

Mrs Tinubu made the remarks in her 2026 International Day of Education message on Sunday, stressing that education remains vital for preparing society to navigate a rapidly evolving global environment.

She explained that education is the most powerful tool for acquiring knowledge, values, creativity, and ethical judgment in an era shaped by innovation and automation.

The First Lady added that skills- and value-based education is essential for thriving in a technology-driven world, urging Nigeria to prioritise education.

“On this International Day of Education 2026, I call on us to reflect on this year’s theme: ‘AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.’

“As we embrace artificial intelligence and innovation, we must ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around.

“Humans must remain the drivers of AI, harnessing innovation while preserving the values that define us and sustain development.

“In Nigeria, our priority is to invest in quality, inclusive education that empowers our children and youth to think critically, act responsibly, and embrace the future with confidence and compassion,” she said.

International Day of Education is celebrated annually on January 24.

It was proclaimed by the United Nations to recognise education’s vital role in promoting peace, development, human rights, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty and promoting gender equality.
