 STAKEHOLDERS MEET, STRATEGISE ON EFFECTIVE TEACHING

As part of ongoing efforts to further raise the standard of basic education in Ogun State, key stakeholders in the sector have convened to deliberate on strategies for effective teaching and learning across public schools.


The meeting, called at the instance of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, was attended by Chairmen and representatives of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Primary School Headteacher of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Parents Club Forum, Association of Primary School Teachers of Nigeria (APSTON), as well as representatives of Education Secretaries across the State.

In his addressing, Chairman of Ogun SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, called on all stakeholders to intensify their commitment to the full implementation of agreed measures, aimed at improving learning outcomes in public schools, stressing that all training and workshops attended by teachers must be cascaded to the zonal levels, while insisting that no teacher should claim ignorance of the newly introduced teaching methodologies.

Evangelist Ifede charged Education Secretaries and other stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of key initiatives such as phonics, designated reading periods, the use of 2D writing techniques and improved handwriting methods, all targeted at strengthening learners’ reading, speaking and writing skills.

He further directed that teachers with strong phonics knowledge be deployed to kindergarten through to Primary Two classes, while encouraging the use of illustrations, diagrams and drawings to enhance pupils’ comprehension.

In his welcome address, the Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, urged Headteachers to improve their capacity in managing school information through the Digital Personnel Record (DIPER), noting that basic ICT skills were essential for effective school administration and called on all stakeholders to work collaboratively and remain united in implementing the resolutions reached at the meeting.

Also speaking, Chairman, Ogun State Conference of Education Secretaries, Mr. Alli Mohammed, commended the SUBEB Chairman for his commitment to repositioning basic education in the State, expressing confidence that the Board’s vision would sustain high standards in the sector.

In their separate remarks, Ogun State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Sewakanu Noah, State Chairman of the Parents Club Association, Reverend Folorunso Segun, representative of State AOPSHON, Comrade Sodipo Raymond, the State president of APSTON, Comrade Salisu Oluwaseun, pledged the support of their respective unions and associations to ensure the full implementation of SUBEB’s directives for the overall improvement of basic education in Ogun State.
