OAUTHC to Host International Surgeons for Complex Liver, Pancreatic Surgeries

The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has called for the referral of eligible patients as it prepares to host an international team of specialists for complex hepatobiliary procedures and liver transplant–related activities.

According to Professor Olusegun Isaac Alatise, the hospital will receive a hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeon and a liver transplant surgeon from the United States and Canada between April 7 and April 11, 2026.

During the visit, the specialists, working with the OAUTHC surgical team, will perform a series of advanced liver, pancreatic and biliary surgeries as part of ongoing preparations for liver transplantation services at the hospital.

Prof. Alatise said the week-long surgical programme will utilise advanced medical equipment supplied by ERBE Elektromedizin GmbH of Germany to support the complex procedures.

He therefore appealed to medical practitioners and healthcare institutions to refer patients diagnosed with resectable liver, pancreatic or biliary cancers who are in good performance condition.

According to him, each referred patient must present with a triple-phase chest and abdominopelvic contrast CT scan as well as an abdominal MRI scan for proper assessment.

Patient selection will take place during the hospital’s regular clinics scheduled for March 19, March 26 and April 2, 2026.

Prof. Alatise also encouraged referring surgeons to participate in the surgical procedures alongside the visiting specialists and the local medical team.

He added that the programme is being organised in partnership with the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), and the Ministerial Committee on Liver Transplantation.

The initiative, he noted, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for advanced hepatobiliary care and establish sustainable liver transplantation services in the country.

Stakeholders and medical professionals have been urged to widely circulate the information to ensure that eligible patients benefit from the specialised surgical outreach.
