NCC Plans Rollout of Affordable Smartphones to Boost Digital Access

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to facilitate the availability of affordable smartphones in Nigeria, in a move aimed at expanding digital access and deepening connectivity across the country.

Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Aminu Maida, disclosed this during a recent media briefing in Abuja, stating that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to make mobile devices more accessible to a broader segment of the population.

“We are exploring ways to bring less expensive smartphones into circulation,” Maida said, noting that improved affordability would enable more Nigerians to participate in the digital economy.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader mandate to drive inclusive access to telecommunications services and bridge the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities.

Maida also highlighted evolving usage trends within the telecoms sector, revealing a steady migration from older technologies to more advanced networks.

“From available data, we are observing a steady transition to 4G connectivity. Currently, over 52 per cent of users are on 4G networks,” he said, adding that reliance on 3G and 2G devices continues to decline.

The NCC boss further commended the media for its role in promoting transparency and public awareness within the telecommunications sector.

According to him, consistent and accurate reporting has supported policy implementation, enhanced public understanding of regulatory initiatives, and strengthened accountability across the industry.

The proposed rollout of low-cost smartphones is expected to complement ongoing efforts to improve broadband penetration and ensure that more Nigerians can access reliable and affordable digital services.
