OGUN REVAMPS NINE FOREST RESERVES, PLANTS 5 MILLION TREES –COMMISSIONER
The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, has disclosed that the present administration has successfully revamped all nine forest reserves in the State and planted over five million trees covering about 500 hectares within the last six years.
Oludotun stated this while defending the Ministry of Forestry’s Budget at the Treasury Board Meeting on the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the 2026 budget, at the Obas Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
He noted that the forest reserves had become moribund before his appointment as Commissioner, adding that the Ministry adopted strategic partnerships with international companies by leasing portions of forest land to plant trees, which later served as raw materials for their production processes.
According to him, the Ministry also cultivated over three million trees independently to ensure sustainability, emphasising that tree planting is a long-term investment, which explained why the Ministry was often undervalued in terms of performance assessment.
The Commissioner lamented that some cocoa farmers had intentionally destroyed tree plantations in a bid to expand their cultivation areas. He added that the Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture to curb such activities.
Oludotun further stated that the Ministry actually required the proposed budget to procure additional machinery to strengthen its task force operations and curb illegal activities within the forest reserves.
In his response, the Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor and Commissioner for Finance, Engr. Dapo Okubadejo, described the forestry sector as one of the State’s major natural endowments, offering a significant competitive advantage. He advised that the sector should not be viewed merely as a source of raw materials for the furniture industry but also explore other opportunities such as sustainable cultivation and wildlife conservation, which were areas that could attract foreign donors and investors.
Okubadejo urged the Ministry to block revenue leakages and adopt cashless policies to boost the State’s internally generated revenue.

BEAUTIFY YOUR ENVIRONS; COMM DIRECTS PROPERTY OWNERS WITH HIGHWAYS FRONTAGE
Property owners across Ogun state whose front are directly facing the Highways have been directed to rid of their frontages of shanties, illegal constructions, bushes and all other obstructive materials.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL, Olatunji Odunlami, gave the directive, calling on all property owners in Ogun State whose properties face highways and roads with setbacks ranging from 15 metres to 70 metres from the centreline of such highways and roads, to take responsibility of such, by clearing out all illegal structures on them and beautify them with plants in line with the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law.
The Commissioner noted that, such highways and roads were zones of ‘strictly no development’, explaining that they were not also designated for parking, for trucks or spaces for the construction of shanties, kiosks and the likes.
He further stated that such uses were not permitted, therefore they remained illegal, noting that, setbacks were meant for the laying of facilities such as expansion of the highways and roads, laying of water pipelines and optic fibre cables, gas and oil pipelines, erection of electricity power lines and planting of trees and grasses for landscaping and beautification.
TPl. Odunlami enjoined owners of properties facing these highways and roads to take responsibility by ensuring that illegal developments such as shanties, truck parking and others are not allowed within the setback of their frontage.
He said, "they are all hereby permitted to take temporary possession of these spaces, apply for planning permission at no cost, clear out any illegal developments and proceed to landscape them with plants and such other beautification"
He revealed that the concerned property owners were also encouraged to approach the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority for support in removing any illegal structures in their frontage.
