RAISING THE BAR: DRIVING INSTITUTIONAL EXCELLENCE AND SUSTAINABLE IMPACT

Leadership, Academic Excellence and Opportunities for a Greater LASU

The week at Lagos State University featured significant developments across institutional leadership, academic quality assurance, digital learning infrastructure and external engagement. From the Vice-Chancellor's inaugural address to Senate to the commissioning of a new computing facility and the commencement of a programme accreditation exercise, the developments reflected the University's continuing efforts to strengthen its academic capacity, improve institutional performance and expand opportunities for its students.

*TOWARDS AFRICA'S MOST CONSEQUENTIAL CITY UNIVERSITY*

This week, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi *BADEJO,* FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, challenged the University Senate to reposition Lagos State University from an institution admired for its size to one whose contributions are indispensable to Lagos State and beyond.

Speaking at her inaugural Senate meeting, Professor *BADEJO* presented a vision of LASU as Africa's most consequential city university, urging members of the academic community to focus not only on institutional growth but also on the measurable impact of the University's teaching, research and engagement with society.

She outlined five guiding principles for advancing this ambition: *making Lagos the University's living laboratory for research and practical solutions; prioritising outputs over inputs; promoting the holistic development of students; establishing peace as a foundation for productivity; and building enduring institutional structures that will outlast individual administrations.*

Reaffirming the importance of institutional unity, Professor *BADEJO* called on the University community to move beyond divisions and work collectively towards a shared future while urging Senate members to take ownership of the vision, insisting that the University's progress must be measured by tangible results and sustained institutional improvements.

*REINFORCING ACADEMIC QUALITY THROUGH NUC ACCREDITATION*

Lagos State University has reaffirmed its commitment to quality assurance and the maintenance of high academic standards as the National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Team commenced the assessment of the University's Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science programme at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja.

In her remarks, Professor *BADEJO* described accreditation as an essential process of institutional self-assessment and continuous improvement, rather than a routine evaluation. She highlighted the University's investment in technology-driven teaching and learning, as well as the electronic resources available through the University Library, which support teaching, learning and research.

She expressed confidence in the University's preparations for the exercise and assured the NUC team of the institution's full cooperation.

*EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIGITAL LEARNING AND INNOVATION*

The University has further strengthened its digital learning infrastructure with the commissioning of a Software Development and Simulation Workstation established by the Data Science for Medical Image Analysis in Nigeria (DATICAN) Consortium for students of the Faculty of Computing.

The facility, located at the Babajide Olusola SANWO-OLU Library Complex, Main Campus, Ojo, accommodates 80 students and is designed to support practical learning, collaborative software development and computing-related research.

DATICAN is a United States-Nigeria consortium comprising Lagos State University, Redeemer's University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Chicago, with LASU serving as its headquarters. Supported by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), the consortium focuses on building capacity in artificial intelligence and data science, particularly for medical research.

*STRENGTHENING ALUMNI RELATIONS AND INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS*

The Vice Chancellor Prof Ayodeji Olawunmi *BADEJO* FCASSON  FAPROCON,  MNAE  received the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani *FATAI,* and the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Olalekan *BAKARE-OKI,* both alumni of LASU, on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor.

During the visit, Mr *BAKARE-OKI* commended Professor *BADEJO* for her contributions to professional development, recalling his participation in a professional programme facilitated by her and acknowledging its positive influence on his career.

In her response, the Vice-Chancellor appreciated the visitors and expressed her intention to reciprocate the gesture through visits to both organisations. She reaffirmed LASU's readiness to foster mutually beneficial relationships with the Lagos State Police Command and LASTMA, particularly through institutional cooperation in areas of shared interest.

The visit highlighted the University's continuing relationship with its alumni and the contributions of its graduates across public service and other professional fields.

*A NEW ACADEMIC SESSION BEGINS*

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor *BADEJO,* has welcomed new and returning students to the 2026/2027 academic session, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities for learning, personal development and academic excellence.

Outlining her administration's priorities, Professor *BADEJO* identified the strengthening of academic programmes, improvement of infrastructure and facilities, expansion of digital capabilities and provision of support systems that enable students to reach their full potential.

She urged new students to integrate into the University community and encouraged returning students to build on their previous achievements through discipline, determination and hard work.

*ADVANCING WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT*

The Vice-Chancellor also joined other distinguished personalities at the 26th National Women's Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The three-day conference, themed *"Anchored in Purpose: Be the Blueprint",* provided a platform for women leaders and other stakeholders to exchange ideas on women's empowerment, leadership, entrepreneurship and community development.

The gathering also highlighted the importance of purposeful leadership and positive contributions to society, providing an opportunity for engagement on issues affecting women and the wider community.

*BUILDING A UNIVERSITY OF LASTING IMPACT*

The week's developments reflect the University's continuing efforts to strengthen its academic standards, improve learning opportunities, deepen institutional relationships and establish a clear direction for sustainable growth.

As LASU advances its institutional priorities, the emphasis remains on translating vision into measurable outcomes, strengthening the University's contribution to society and building an institution whose achievements will endure.

*Towards an Even Greater LASU.*
