Health Experts Take Wellness Campaign to Itoku Market, Promote Disease Prevention
As part of efforts to promote healthy living and improve access to health education at the grassroots level, certified healthcare professionals under the umbrella of Nehemiah’s Vision have taken a wellness campaign to traders at the Adire-Kampala Market in Itoku, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Speaking to journalists via an online interview, the founder of Nehemiah’s Vision, Nurse Oyinlola Talabi, who is based in the United States, explained that the initiative was designed to reduce the incidence of chronic illnesses, improve health outcomes, and ultimately lower mortality and morbidity rates within local communities.
According to her, "the initiative is built on a multi-layered approach to public health".
"The programme focuses on building healthier communities through primary, secondary, and tertiary disease prevention strategies. We are taking one market every month to help people develop healthier lifestyles through these three pillars of prevention", Nurse Talabi stated.
She reassured the public of the campaign's credibility, noting that all personnel involved in the outreach are qualified healthcare professionals, including certified nurses and medical doctors.
Addressing the traders, the Director of Nehemiah’s Vision, Nurse Iyabode Ilupeju, highlighted the unique health risks associated with the demanding nature of market activities, warning that'll common trading habits such as prolonged sitting, lack of physical exercise, daily stress, inadequate sleep, poor medication compliance, and other unhealthy lifestyle choices could have severe long-term consequences on their health.
Nurse Ilupeju emphasized that these factors contribute significantly to the rising prevalence of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, advising the traders to prioritize their health by adopting better lifestyle habits and ensuring they undergo regular medical check-ups.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Alhaja Medinat Oyetola and Chief Olanrewaju Ajibawo, expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, commending Nehemiah’s Vision for showing genuine concern for the health and well-being of market traders.
The outreach, which was highly impactful, featured
Interactive health education sessions,
One-on-one medical consultations,
Vital health screenings aimed at encouraging preventive healthcare practices, as well as
distribution of free medications to beneficiaries based on doctors' prescriptions.
