TEF Engages Media Ahead of 2026 Cohort Unveiling, Reaffirms Commitment to African Entrepreneurs
The Tony Elumelu Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering African entrepreneurs as it concluded its 2026 media parley, setting the stage for the official announcement of this year’s cohort under its flagship Entrepreneurship Programme.
The virtual engagement, held on Saturday, brought together media stakeholders from across the continent, offering insights into the scale, structure, and impact of the 2026 programme adding that the session served as a precursor to the much-anticipated unveiling of 3,200 young African entrepreneurs scheduled for March 22.
During the parley, the Foundation highlighted the overwhelming interest in this year’s programme, revealing that over 265,000 applications were received from all 54 African countries, an indication of the growing entrepreneurial spirit and demand for funding across the continent.
Officials noted that the 2026 cohort will benefit from a combined funding pool of approximately $16 million, with each selected entrepreneur receiving $5,000 in non-refundable seed capital, alongside access to business training, mentorship, and a global network of investors and partners.
Speaking on the initiative, Founder Tony Elumelu reiterated the Foundation’s belief that Africa’s economic transformation lies in the hands of its entrepreneurs.
She emphasized that empowering young Africans to build sustainable businesses remains the most viable pathway to job creation, poverty reduction, and long-term economic growth across the continent.
The Foundation also underscored the collaborative nature of the 2026 programme, which is being implemented in partnership with global institutions including the European Union, UNICEF, and the United Nations Development Programme, among others.
Since its inception, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has trained over 2.5 million Africans and funded more than 24,000 entrepreneurs, whose businesses have collectively generated billions in revenue and created over 1.5 million jobs.
