Nigeria Marks National Privacy Week, NCC Reaffirms Commitment to Data Protection

Nigeria has joined the global community to commemorate the National Privacy Week 2026, with the Nigerian Communications Commission reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding consumer data and promoting responsible digital governance.

The Commission made this known in a statement issued to mark the annual event, which is held in alignment with Global Privacy Day celebrated every January 28. The event is organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and other stakeholders to promote awareness and strengthen data protection practices across the country.

This year’s theme, “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics and Innovation,” highlights the importance of protecting personal data amid rapid technological advancement. According to the NCC, the week-long observance aims to move beyond awareness by fostering a sustainable culture of digital trust, while empowering data subjects, strengthening corporate accountability and driving economic growth.

The telecom regulator noted that data protection and privacy remain critical to building trust and encouraging innovation within Nigeria’s digital economy. It stressed that the Commission remains committed to protecting consumer rights, ensuring responsible data governance and enforcing compliance with established data protection standards among telecommunications operators.

The NCC further stated that the telecommunications sector serves as the backbone of Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting growth across several sectors. With the expansion of 5G, the proliferation of Internet of Things devices and the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, the Commission acknowledged its heightened responsibility to protect consumer interests in the evolving digital landscape.

As part of activities marking the week, the NCC said it would continue to strengthen collaboration with the NDPC to ensure that telecommunications licensees fully understand their obligations under Nigeria’s data protection framework, while also educating consumers about their rights.

The Commission also emphasized that sensitive consumer information such as call records, location data and digital identities must be handled strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Consumers with complaints about how telecom operators manage their personal data were encouraged to report through the NCC Consumer Portal or contact the Commission’s toll-free line for assistance.

The NCC commended the NDPC for organising the National Privacy Week and reiterated its support for initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital future while ensuring the privacy and protection of citizens’ data.
