As headline sponsor of one of Africa’s oldest and most celebrated polo events, GTCO continues to support a platform that combines sporting excellence with cultural heritage, lifestyle engagement and international participation. The 2026 edition, held at the historic Lagos Polo Club from January 27 to February 15, attracted elite local and foreign teams, dignitaries, corporate leaders and thousands of spectators, reinforcing its reputation as Africa’s premier polo spectacle.
The Majekodunmi Cup final produced a thrilling contest as Lagos STL defeated Shoreline/A1 10–7 in a high-intensity encounter settled by a late decisive goal. The victory completed a dominant outing for STL, who also captured the Independence Cup, Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup and the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup, underlining the team’s depth, discipline and championship pedigree.
Speaking on the significance of the tournament and GTCO’s long-standing sponsorship, the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Segun Agbaje, emphasised the broader impact of sports in nation-building and global positioning.
He said the tournament celebrates not only the sport of polo but also values such as teamwork, discipline, fair play and excellence, adding that it presents Nigeria and Africa to a global audience and reinforces the continent’s place on the world stage.
“Our enduring sponsorship reflects our belief that sports can expand opportunities, build connections and deliver world-class experiences,” he noted.
Lagos STL captain, Yasin Amusan, who was named Most Valuable Player of the Majekodunmi Cup final, attributed the victory to the team’s resilience and unity, describing it as the reward for preparation and belief. He also acknowledged the enthusiastic support of fans throughout the tournament.
Although finishing runners-up in the Majekodunmi and Independence Cups, Shoreline/A1 recorded success earlier by winning the Oba of Lagos Cup. Other highlights included Lagos Art Hotel’s dramatic triumph in the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup and Kano Golden Alchemy’s commanding performance to secure the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup, reflecting the competition’s depth and national spread.
Founded in 1904, the Lagos Polo Club remains one of Africa’s most storied sporting institutions, and its annual international tournament continues to serve as a major cultural and sporting landmark. GTCO’s partnership with the event underscores its sustained investment in initiatives that promote excellence, community pride and global engagement.
