NCC Licenses Six New ISPs to Deepen Internet Connectivity
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has licensed six new Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as part of its ongoing efforts to expand internet access, deepen competition, and strengthen broadband penetration across the country.
The development, reflected in the Commission’s latest licensing database, is expected to further energise Nigeria’s fast-evolving internet market, where satellite operators such as Elon Musk’s Starlink, emerging players including Amazon’s LEO satellite initiative (formerly Project Kuiper) and BeetleSat-1, alongside the four major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) — MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile — are competing for market share.
According to the NCC, the newly licensed ISPs are Intellvision Technologies Limited, Granet Technologies Limited, Fiber Sonic Limited, Dasol Solution Services Limited, Boost ISP Limited, and Amazon Kuiper Nigeria Limited.
With the addition of these six companies, the total number of licensed ISPs in Nigeria increased to 231, up from 225 recorded in December 2025, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and competitive broadband ecosystem.
The licensing data also revealed that the majority of ISPs remain concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, a trend that reflects the high demand for internet-driven services in the nation’s major commercial and administrative hubs.
Recall that NCC data for the second quarter of 2025 showed that Starlink, Spectranet, and FibreOne collectively accounted for about 65 per cent of active ISP customers. At the time, out of 225 licensed ISPs, only 133 reported active customer connections, with a combined subscriber base of 313,713 users.
Further analysis indicated that Spectranet led the ISP segment with 99,520 active subscribers, followed by Starlink with 66,523, while FibreOne ranked third with 37,117 active customers.
Industry analysts say the issuance of new licences is likely to intensify competition within the ISP space, drive increased investment in critical broadband infrastructure, and ultimately improve the quality, affordability, and reach of internet services for telecoms subscribers nationwide. They also note that the move aligns with the objectives of Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (NNBP) and the NCC’s broader mandate to accelerate digital inclusion and economic growth.
