“The consequence of the single story is that it robs people of dignity.”

– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

When the award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie warned of the dangers of a single story many years ago in a TED Talk she delivered, no one knew it would still be a big issue in our society today.

Yet, it assumes a more pernicious stridency, such that context often becomes the first casualty of viral content in the frenzied world of social media and instant news cycles.

The controversy surrounding Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s recent innocuous statement at an endorsement rally is a perfect case study of how partial information or a single story can spark unnecessary political tantrums and misdirected criticism that result in media jungle justice.

Indeed, the cut-and-paste viral video showing Governor Soludo advising politicians who promise to serve only one term if elected has been widely misinterpreted, particularly by supporters of presidential aspirant Peter Obi, known as Obidients.

This misunderstanding stems from a fundamental failure to grasp the specific political context within which the Governor was speaking, thereby exposing the true intentions of those seeking one-term political office

To understand Governor Soludo’s statement, one must first appreciate the unique political dynamics of Anambra State. The state operates under an established zoning consensus whereby the governorship rotates among its three senatorial districts: Anambra South, Anambra Central, and Anambra North. This gentleman’s agreement has been instrumental in maintaining political balance and ensuring equitable representation across the state for years.

Governor Soludo, who hails from Anambra South, specifically addressed Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who represents Anambra South. Ukachukwu’s promise to serve only one term if elected is not the magnanimous gesture it might appear to be at first glance. Instead, Governor Soludo argues that it represents a calculated attempt to disrupt the established zoning formula and mislead the electorate.

According to the rotation principle, since Governor Soludo (Anambra South) seeks a second term, the next governorship slot should rightfully go to Anambra Central. By promising to serve only one term, Ukachukwu is trying to jump the queue ahead of Anambra Central’s turn. The grand conspiracy behind the single-term pledge is to bait unsuspecting Anambra voters and grab power by subterfuge. This, Governor Soludo posits, is quite disingenuous and unreasonable.

The needless paroxysmal umbrage attending the viral video arose when Obidients and news analysts who should know better misinterpreted Governor Soludo’s criticism as a veiled attack on Peter Obi, who has also pledged to serve only one term if elected president in 2027. This impulsive interpretation reveals a fundamental ignorance of both the audience and the subject matter of Governor Soludo’s remarks. It also exposes the perils of a single story as people shun sound reasoning and rush into petulant vilification of someone not aligned with their political leanings.

During his speech, Governor Soludo did not reference Peter Obi or the presidential race. His comments were squarely focused on the Anambra gubernatorial contest and the specific disruption posed by Ukachukwu’s campaign promise within local zoning politics.

The leap from discussing Anambra State zoning arrangements to assumptions about Peter Obi’s presidential ambitions is taking fanatical politicking too far.

The Nigerian media, especially clout-chasing, clickbaiting online blogs, bears significant responsibility for this unfair hectoring of the Anambra governor. By reporting Governor Soludo’s statement in cut-and-paste isolation, without providing the full context of his speech or the background of Anambra’s zoning politics, news outlets created fertile ground for misinterpretation by feckless critics who rush into twisted conclusions. Journalism thrives on context, and when that context is stripped away, even the most straightforward statements can be twisted into controversy.

Responsible reporting would have included the full transcript of Governor Soludo’s remarks, an explanation of Anambra’s political zoning system, and clarification of whom the Governor was actually addressing. Instead, the focus on creating viral content overshadowed the need for comprehensive and contextual reporting, fueling media jungle justice.

This incident should be an opportunity to refine Nigerian political discourse and elevate it to a higher pedestal of dignity. In our increasingly polarised political environment, with Anambra’s upcoming November election and Nigeria’s 2027 election, we must resist the temptation to read malicious intent into every statement made by political figures we may disagree with. The rush to take offence often closes our eyes to the actual issues being discussed and makes many descend to the level of barbaric street mobs baying for the blood of the innocent.

Obidients and Peter Obi must demonstrate the political maturity and leadership that their movement claims to represent. Rather than launching defensive or reactive attacks based on misunderstood statements, they could focus their energy on substantive policy discussions and constructive political engagement. Going forward, they should always be wary of the dangers of a single story circulated on social media.

In all of this, the strength of any democracy lies not in the absence of political disagreement, but in the ability of its citizens and institutions to engage with those disagreements thoughtfully, decently, and constructively. By taking the time to understand context, verify information, and engage with the issues at stake, we can elevate our political discourse and make more informed decisions about our leaders and future.

Our democracy deserves nothing less.
