Fubara Crisis: Why Obasanjo Succeeded Where Others Failed – Atiku’s Camp Drops Bombshell
A top aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Olarewaju compared the move to similar actions taken under former President Olusegun Obasanjo but argued that such measures were easier to implement in the past due to Nigeria’s young democracy and slower news cycles.
He noted that while Obasanjo could remove governors with little resistance, Tinubu’s attempt to do the same in Rivers State is likely to backfire in today’s political landscape. Olarewaju emphasized that the absence of social media during Obasanjo’s tenure made it easier to control narratives, whereas the current digital age makes such actions more difficult to execute without backlash.
Citing the 2003 abduction of then-Governor Chris Ngige as an example, he highlighted how political maneuvers were easier to conceal at the time.
Olarewaju also condemned Tinubu’s appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He described the decision as “dangerous” and expressed shock over Tinubu’s reliance on a retired military officer to resolve a political crisis.
He warned that Tinubu’s approach could easily backfire, noting that unlike Obasanjo, Tinubu lacks the political influence to pull off such moves successfully. Additionally, he blamed Tinubu’s economic policies for pushing more Nigerians into poverty.
Concluding his remarks, Olarewaju argued that Tinubu is trying to replicate Obasanjo’s tactics in a vastly different political era, asserting that such actions will not work in today’s democratic and media-driven environment.
