With the biting hardship not looking to abate anytime soon, Nigerians are now living and experiencing tragic happenings daily across the country.

Salma Yunusa
Amid these worrying adversities, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital territory is fast gaining notoriety with the latest act of man’s cruelty being the alleged stabbing to death of a 19-year-old secondary school student, Salma Yunusa by her co-tenant in Kubwa, a residential district of Bwari Area Council in the FCT.

According to the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect, one Immaculate Chukwudi, who lives with them in the same compound as a co-tenant has been arrested over the incident.

However, Adeh, a Superintendent of Police (SP), stated that the matter is now under investigation and the suspect would soon be charged in court.

Information available indicated that the deceased, Salma, was living under the care of her elder sister, Bilikisu Yunusa, around the Byazhin area of Kubwa described by many as an affordable suburb within the nation’s capital, when the fatal incident occurred.

Narrating the unfortunate story on Sunday, the deceased’s sister, Bilikisu, said there was an argument between the suspect and a male tenant simply called Pastor in which she (Bilikisu), tried to intervene as a good neighbour.

Opening up further on the events that eventually took her younger sister’s life, Bilikisu said; ‘’I saw the Pastor packing his clothes that were washed, even though they were yet to dry, and when I tried to find out why, he simply told me that it’s the suspect that demanded it. I commended his decision, only for the woman to come out and threaten to deal with me, accusing me of being involved in the matter.

“She brought out a knife later around 10 pm in the night, and continued to make some noise in the house. The next morning, I went to my drum to fetch water, but the woman approached again and spat over the water. My younger sister (the deceased) came out of the room. After informing her about the development, she immediately threw away the water on the ground, which may have annoyed the suspect.

“At that point, the suspect left only for her to return with a bucket filled with water and empty it on my sister. ’As my sister was trying to clear her face from the water, she brought out a knife and stabbed her in the chest.

“In the heat of that moment, I rushed her (my sister) to the Kubwa General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.’’

“We had to inform the Police immediately about the incident and they responded promptly by coming down to the house and got the suspect arrested.

Meanwhile, family sources have confirmed that the remains of the deceased were committed to Mother Earth at her hometown in Ajagwumu, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday, March 12, 2024. – With Additional reports.
