Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on the new Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Sikiru Okuribido to concentrate more on the task of accelerating the pace of socio-economic development of the Idowa community and Ijebuland.


Governor Abiodun, who made the call at the official Installation and Presentation of Staff of Office to Oba Sikiru Okuribido, the Dagburewe of Idowa in Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state, said his appointment was a call to serve and therefore he should be receptive to all, irrespective of their political affiliation, religion and social inclination, to engender the desired development in the community.

Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, the Governor said the new monarch should take cognizance of the cosmopolitan nature of Idowa township and ensure peaceful co-existence among the people and neighbouring communities, stressing that no meaningful development would take place in an environment of rancour and acrimony.

He hinted that the steadfastness, cooperation and support of the people had complemented the present administration’s ’Building our Future Together’ agenda in the state, reaffirming that government would continue to entrench the ISEYA mantra to create individual prosperity for the people and enhance the economy of the State.

Speaking at the occasion, the Chairman, Odogbolu Local Government, Hon. Ladejobi Adebayo, admonished the monarch to utilise his position and wealth of experience to bring unprecedented progress to the land, calling on sons and daughters of the land to rally round the new king for Idowa’s development.

In their remarks, the Otufesojoye of Irete in Ijebuland, Oba Olusegun Yesufu and former President, Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, respectively, congratulated the new monarch on his official installation, praying that God would grant him wisdom to lead aright with a large heart to sustain peace in the community.

The new Dagburewe of Idowa, in his acceptance remark, appreciated the state government and the people of Idowa for the trust reposed in him to steer the ship of the town, promising to uphold the tradition of the land, while embracing innovations and strive to work its socio–economic development.

IMPORTANCE OF DATA MANAGEMENT IDENTIFIED FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE

          Data management is necessary to optimise the quality of work, save time and ensure performance for effective delivery, so as to complement government’s agenda on agriculture and food security

Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, stated this at a three-day training on Data Management and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Application, organised by Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), for staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, at Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.

Hon. Owotomo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Samuel Adeogun, explained that the training was to build the capacity of staff for effective delivery of various government intervention, particularly in the agricultural sector, adding that the platform would also avail the different department in the Ministry to provide adequate and effective data and provision of information.

He noted that utilisation of computers along with other telecommunication equipment for storage, retrieval, transmission of data among other tasks, would improve the efficiency of the Ministry, advising participants to make adequate use of the knowledge gained from the training to improve on their productivity.

"Data runs the world, if you do not have good data, you cannot plan, and if you do not plan, you cannot have good results; when the results are there, you will be able to measure the impact of the activities", he said.

On her part, the Project Manager, OGSTEP, Dr. Mrs Oluseyi Olugire, appreciated government for the training, noting that it would greatly impact on their productivity, as well as give them a basic grasp of ICT tools usage in their various offices.

Earlier, the monitoring and evaluation specialist, OGSTEP, Dr. Abiodun Adeeko, advised that the training should be seen as an empowerment, in order to expand the horizon of participants.

Speaking on behalf of other participants, Mr. Seun Somide and Miss Aminat Sumola, appreciated the Ministry for the initiative, saying the training had widened their knowledge on the importance of data management and ICT application and promised to maximally utilise knowledge gained to take the sector to an enviable height.

 OGSG PARTNERS NOMAP TO ENHANCE ELECTRICITY GENERATION

Ogun State government has set in motion, plans to identify a viable cluster to enhance rural electrification programme and attract more potential investors to the state. 

          The Special Assistant to the Governor on Governor's Office and Technical Matters, Mr. Seyi Ogunseye, stated this at the energy meeting with members of the Nigerian Off-grid Market Acceleration Programme (NOMAP), at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, saying government was mapping out strategies for economic development clusters, to assist in developing the off-grid electrification plans, policies and implementation strategies on how to achieve a reliable electricity in the state.

Mr. Ogunseye said the plan would assist people, especially in the rural area that do not have access to bank accounts pay for energy used.

On his part, his counterpart on Energy Matters, Mr. Oluwafemi Omisanjo, reiterated that both the state government and the Nomad company were collaborating on how to enact Electricity Law with e-mapping of the state to identify the viable area, adding that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed after due consultation to boost economic activities across the state.

Responding, Mr. Adedotun Eyinade, a member of the Nomad team, pledged the company’s support in solving off-grid energy, market intelligence, distribution of electricity and assist in documents implementation of the electricity policy and bills.

 OGSG, FG TRAIN LEARNERS ON DIGITAL LITERACY, CREATIVE THINKING

As a way of building the capacity of learners on creative thinking, Ogun State government has trained 500 selected senior secondary school students on computer literacy to create content, towards enhancing digital knowledge.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, while speaking during the opening of a 4-Day capacity building for the students, tagged, ’’Build-A-Thon Programme’’, organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, in conjunction with the Ministry, said the initiative was an avenue to take the state to a greater height.

Prof. Arigbabu pointed out that the training would provide opportunities for the students to develop their talents, relate and learn from one another, share experience, as well as become technology experts, hinting that the training was ongoing simultaneously in Imo and Maiduguri states and be replicated in all the 517 secondary schools in the state.

"If we develop children in this way, most of our problems will be easily solved. To me, this is the beginning of many good things to happen in the country. We want to catch the students young, starting from this stage; they are being developed as critical thinkers, problem solvers and technology experts", he said.

Also speaking, Minister for Communication, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented by his Special Assistant, Mrs. Banke Ajagunna, stated that the event would enable students get more involved in technological revolution.

Earlier, Director of Education, Science and Technology in the Ministry, Mr. Sunkanmi Ogunpola, explained that the programme was introduced to create an avenue where teenagers could grow up to be problem solvers.

Two of the benefiting students, Oluwatomi Talabi of Anglican High School, Ibara and Anjolaoluwa Adebowale of Lafenwa High School, both in Abeokuta, appreciated the Federal and state governments on behalf of other learners for the laudable initiative, describing the programme as an agenda to secure the future generation of the country.

OGUN PROMISES EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION IN ACHIEVING SDGs

Ogun State government is committed to sustaining collaboration with relevant stakeholders to further ensure provision of quality and affordable healthcare services, especially for the people in the rural areas, thereby achieving Sustainable Development Goals in the health sector.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, gave the assurance in her office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while playing host to a team from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), led by its Programme Officer, Miss Ajibike Adewole.

Dr. Coker, who said government was making efforts at improving infrastructure, increase access to quality healthcare services and enhance the capacity of healthcare workers, acknowledged the support of local and international partners in strengthening the health sector, assuring the team of government’s commitment to an enabling environment for the successful implementation of its policies in the sector.

In her remarks, Miss Adewole revealed that JICA would assist four states, including Ogun, in eradicating communicable diseases, improve maternal and child healthcare, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to preventing early detection of ailments and effective treatment strategies.

She expressed readiness to work closely with insurance agencies, Primary Healthcare Centres, agency for the control of AIDS and general hospitals, to develop sustainable solutions that would address specific needs and challenges in the state.

The team was later conducted round the state Primary Healthcare Development Board, Health Insurance Agency, General Hospital, Ijaye; Oba Ademola Maternity Hospital, Ijemo; Primary Health Center, Itoko, and construction site of the Central Medical Store project, all in Abeokuta, among others.

OGSG ASSURES OF CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP TO FOSTER ECONOMIC GROWTH

Ogun state government says it will continue to support and partner agricultural investors to foster economic growth of the state.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, said this while playing host to Lee Group team, led by its Project Director, Lam Wing Ki Wilkins, who came in company of the member, Federal House of Representatives, Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Constituency, Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, to finalise arrangements on the cultivation of rice and cotton farms in Eggua and Iwoye in Yewa North and Imeko/Afon Local Governments Area of the state.

Hon. Owotomo assured the investors of adequate security, good road network, conducive environment and unflinching support of the host community.

Commenting on the company's desire to go into cassava farming, the Commissioner advised them to take advantage of the state government's cluster arrangements to ensure shared resources.

Speaking, Hon. Isiaka commended government for effectively interfacing with investors, emphasising the need to fast track the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between the Ministry and investors, in order to commence the projects as scheduled.

Earlier, Lam Wing Ki Wilkins expressed the company's readiness to start the project as scheduled, said the company was interested in going into cassava farming, as soon as the cotton and rice farms take off.

2024 REVENUE TARGET IS ACHIEVABLE - OGIRS BOSS

The Executive Chairman of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye, has expressed optimism that the revenue figure of N100B proposed for year 2024 is achievable through digitalisation of all tax transactions in the state, other strategic plans and staff determination.

Mr. Olaleye gave the assurance during a 2-day 2023 4th Quarter Budget Performance and 2024 Budget Strategic Session at OGIRS headquarters in Abeokuta, stating that despite challenges encountered during the year 2023, the agency's performance was commendable, compared to other previous years.

He pointed out that apart from digitalisation of all revenue products, efforts were on to establish Oyo State Border Tax Unit to explore opportunities that abound in the area, to engender tax reconciliation with Oyo State, just like the Lagos Border Tax.

The Chairman urged participants not to be discouraged with the targeted figure but determine to be proactive in exploring unharnessed areas by offering more tax advisory roles to taxpayers, especially for those in the informal sector, for improved revenue generation.

Earlier, the Director of Corporate Development, Mr. Taiwo Ogundimu, assured staffers that all challenges encountered in the previous year would be attended to and become stepping stones to better achievements.

Participants at the session include, the Special Adviser on Revenue, Senior Special Assistant, all Directors of the Agency, Zonal Controllers, Unit Heads and Tax Office Managers.

YSLG TO LOCKUP HOUSES WITH NO TOILET

In line with Ogun State government’s policy of creating conducive and hygienic environment at ensuring healthy living for the people, Yewa South Local Government has vowed to lockup houses with no toilet within the area.

The Chairman of the local government, Hon. Lateef Salami, gave the warning, while playing host to the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Environment, Mr. Samuel Oyeleye, in his office at Ilaro.

Hon. Salami who revealed that the council has issued notice letters to affected houses, stated that the local government would not collect the usual fine of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000) from erring landlords but ensure their compliance.

He called for synergy between the local government and the Ministry of Environment, to engender more conducive environment.

Speaking, Mr. Oyeleye reiterated the need for the local government to be more proactive, especially in the area of sanitation to promote healthy living among the people in the area through sensitisation and desist from building on waterways to prevent flooding.

Contributing, the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mr. Bankole Omitogun, while appreciating the Permanent Secretary for the visit, pledged that the council would continue to promote hygienic environment.
