IKENNE JOINS COMITY OF OPEN DEFECATION FREE LGs

IKENNE JOINS COMITY OF OPEN DEFECATION FREE LGs

The effort of the Ogun State government to achieve state-wide Open Defecation Free status by the year 2025, is yielding positive results with the declaration of Ikenne Local Government Area of the state as Open Defecation Free by the National Task Group on Sanitation.

The pronouncement had made Ikenne, which was a pilot local government in the state, to be second in the South-West to achieve such status.

Commissioner for Rural Development, Mrs. Olufemi Ilori-Oduntan, said the feat could not have been possible but for the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun's prompt release of funds for the triggering of over 171 communities and households’ toilet construction and provision of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in public places across the state, as well as provision of potable water for proper hygienic practice, to ensure safer and cleaner environment, promising that more local governments would join the league in due course.

On his part, the Programme Manager, Ogun State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN), Mr. Sola Ogunbo, said the state had been working assiduously to ensure residents desist from open defecation through programmes and activities such as, Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene  (PEWASH) of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, which the state keyed into since inception of the present administration, as well as Community- Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Approach and Public Sensitisation.

It would be recalled that the state in 2020, signed a document, Road Map to End Open Defecation by Year 2025, where the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, was made the State Sanitation Ambassador.
