OGUN TO WOO FOREIGN INVESTORS IN TOURISM SECTOR

Tourism is a viable sector, capable of improving the economy of any state and the country at large. To this end, several mechanisms had been put in place to woo foreign and private partnership in the sector, so as to increase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Ogun State.


Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, stated this while fielding questions from journalists in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, stating that other measures to boost the sector include, creation of more tourism opportunities, granting investment incentives to investors, favourable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations, creating an encouraging tax system, as well as ensuring good security system across various tourist sites in the state.

Hon. Fagbayi further pointed out that the present administration in the state was passionate about culture and tourism development, hence, the sector was opened up to private investors.

He also informed that the Ministry had intensified efforts to discover and develop more sites, towards providing required publicity for adequate awareness and prominence, adding that annual stakeholders meeting were being organised for stakeholders in tourism sector to promote tourism, in line with international best practices.

GOVERNOR ABIODUN'S AIDE URGES YOUTH TO EMBRACE VOCATIONAL SKILLS

The Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, has urged youths to embrace technical and vocational, as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills with academics, for them to develop physically, mentally and financially.

Mrs. Soyombo, who gave this charge in Iperu, during a Sensitisation Talk On The Importance of Education As Tool to Eradicate Poverty, organised by Iperu Remo Education Trust Management Board, said the skills were essential for the socio-economic well-being of individuals and the community at large.

The Governor's aide pointed out that establishing vocational and ICT training centre in every community would reduce social vices such as, cultism, hooliganism, immorality and kidnapping, noting that youths who lag behind in academics should be encouraged to engage in technical and vocational skills.

She explained that the present generation were conversant with technology, hence the need for teachers to brace up and ensure learners were trained, in line with 21st Century Methodology, enjoining parents and school drop outs to maximise the opportunity of Mass Education provided by Prince Dapo Abiodun's government for them to be literate.

"Our education should be all encompassing. We have to look out for opportunities for our children, for them not to miss out; any learner that is not gifted in education, must be able to learn one trade or the other through technical school", she said.

Speaking, Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Hon. Olusegun Ogunleye, stated that education, apart from providing individuals with knowledge, skills and opportunities to improve economic and social status, also plays a crucial role in poverty reduction in the society, appreciating the governor for being a visionary and pragmatic leader.

Also, Chairman, Iperu Development Association, Chief Babajide Oyeti, explained that the programme was organised for the development of education in the community, expressing gratitude to the organiser for the initiative to improve education standard in the area.

Remarking, Chairman of the scheme, Mr. Mofopefoluwa Joseph, noted that the objective of the event was to use education as a tool to eradicate poverty, urging people to support the present government in its education policy, towards making a difference in the society.

OGSG, GERMAN ORGANISATIONS COLLABORATE TO BOOST COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES

Towards strengthening and mentoring cooperative institutions in Ogun State, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Giessen-Friedberg and VolksBank, both from Germany, in collaboration with Ogun State Cooperative Federation Ltd. (OGSCOFED), is set to further enhance the socio-economic development of the state.

Welcoming the German delegation to his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Alhaji Ademola Balogun, said the collaboration was a welcome development, adding that it would be a game changer for cooperative operators in the state and pave way for more opportunities, as well as new skill acquisition, thereby bringing more dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots.

Alhaji Balogun appreciated the delegation, led by Senior Advisor, Norbert Noisser, for choosing to invest in the state, assuring them of government's readiness to collaborate for further socio-economic development of the state.

           Remarking, the leader of the delegation, Noisser, expressed the desire to work with the state government in areas of vocational trainings, language skill acquisition, cooperative administration and management among others, in order to uplift cooperative societies and foster cordial working relationship between Germany and the state, revealing that the delegation would meet with more government officials for further planning and deliberation.

OGUN COMMISSIONER CALLS FOR MALE ENGAGEMENT AGAINST GBV

Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon.  Adijat Adeleye, has called for male engagement towards eradication of gender based violence and be an agent of change in the fight against the menace.

Hon. Adeleye gave this admonition at a 16day-activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) campaign (male engagement), organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with United Nations Population Funds(UNFPA), at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode.

She noted that male engagement became necessary in addressing gender inequality and character modification and there was need for policy makers and stakeholders to eradicate GBV in the society.

According to her, “the task of ending GBV should go beyond educating and sensitising only the girl-child, but raising male champions, with the mind-set that they should give support to females, working them through the journey of life to promote gender based equality for societal development”.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Oluwaseyi Sokoya, represented by the Director, Women Empowerment Services, Mrs. Wonuola Kassim, said a lot of attention had been directed on the girl-child with the believe that girls were more vulnerable to all sorts of violence, adding that men were important, as they also experience some form of sexual abuse.

"We are here to raise males as champions to advocate elimination of GBV in our tertiary institutions. It is time to protect our male gender from all forms of violence, increase male capacity so they can equally unite with the female gender and invest in the prevention of gender violence against all and sundry", he said.

In his goodwill message, the Dean, Student Affairs of the institution, Dr. Ahmed Abdul-Malik, urged the male-child to stem the menace of GBV, calling for more education and public enlightenment towards its eradication, in order to achieve a society, devoid of violence.

Appreciating government for the awareness, the President, Student Union Government of the institution, Emmanuel Akinfetan, said it was essential for a male child to have adequate knowledge on gender based violence and other sexually related abuses, as most of the perpetrators were assumed to be males, adding that a lot had to do with their upbringing.

OGUN HoS COMMENDS LABOUR UNIONS ON COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS

The leadership and members of the organised labour in Ogun State have been commended for their cooperation, collaboration and support to the state government.

Ogun State Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, who gave the commendation while declaring open a two-day leadership retreat (Harmattan Course), with the theme, "Empowering Leadership: Building a Strong Future for Workers", organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Council, at the Council Secretariat Hall, Leme, Abeokuta, solicited for more understanding and support from the labour leaders, assuring that government would continue to meet their demands within available resources.

Mr. Fagbohun said all hands must be on deck to enhance the capacity of the State by generating more revenue, which would in turn, better the lots of workers and the generality of the people in the state.

"I enjoin you to block leakages and stop wastages at your spheres of influence and I solicit your continued support towards the continued successful implementation of the 'Building Our Future Together' agenda of the present administration", he said.

He reiterated government’s efforts towards boosting workers' welfare including, conduct and release of five promotions in four years, constant training and retraining initiatives for all cadres, appointment of Permanent Secretaries as and when due, unprecedented payment of peculiar allowance, palliative packages and release of CNG-powered buses, among others.

The HoS enjoined the participants to take advantage of the retreat to upscale their skills and enhance their knowledge for efficiency and effectiveness, saying the training was meant to bond, explore new frontiers, rejuvenate, encourage one another, collaborate, enhance learning and development.

On his part, the lead facilitator, the President, Nigerian Workforce Strategy and Enlightenment Centre (NIWOSEC), Dr. David Ehindero, appreciated the state government for its continued support to the organised labour, noting that collaborative approach to labour unionism to foster oneness and address challenges facing labour unions, with the aim of solving them contributed to the success story in the State.

He pointed out that upholding excellence to advance the welfare of the workers, enhance the spirit of empowerment and leadership skill to build the workforce were the core objectives of the retreat, urging participants to concentrate, in order to expand their horizon.

Earlier, the Chairman, Ogun State Council of the NLC, Comrade Ademola Hameed- Benco, while appreciating the governor, whom he described as labour friendly and compassionate, said the retreat was to strengthen leadership capacity, as well as leadership development, labour strategic planning, industrial relations planning and policy advocacy and engagement, as leadership is not exacting powers but empowering others.

Highlight of the event was presentation of awards to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his outstanding contributions to labour matters; the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, for his exemplary leadership and the Head of Service, Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, for being a legacy builder.

In attendance was the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Service Matters, Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Oladipupo Ogunfowora and all Directors from the Bureau.

PRIMARY, SECONDARY, TECHNICAL SCHOOLS IN OGUN TO PROCEED ON HOLIDAY

Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as Government Science and Technical Colleges across the state to proceed on 2023/2024 Academic Session First Term Holiday, from Monday, December 18, 2023 to Friday, January 5, 2024.

A release signed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, stated that schools were expected to resume for Second Term school activities on Monday, January 8, 2024.

The release enjoined parents and guardians to take proper care of their wards during the holiday period.
