Igboho: The Asylum Request That Sends Buhari Govt Into Panic Mode
The Nigerian government may have embarked on a failed and desperate mission, in the bid to get detained Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho extradited to Nigeria from Benin Republic where he was arrested on Monday.
ThePagesNews gathered that, the activist whose wife is a German citizen, may have days before his arrest in Benin Republic, applied for political asylum in Germany.
According to our source, the near certain of the application receiving a favourable and prompt consideration, was responsible for the Buhari government’s desperation to prevent him from entering the country, leading to the interception of Igboho on his way to the European country on Monday night.
The source further obliged that the Nigerian government has made a big mess of the situation by its desperation to hold on to Igboho against public evidence of the man believed to be a victim of state persecution.
It is also for this reason, she said, it is envisaged that the government may bite more than it can chew in this, if it continue with the current posture of forcefully taking custody of the detained activist.
A Court hearing over the extradition of the detained Igboho failed to hold on Wednesday at Benin Republic.
This, it was gathered may not be unconnected with provisions of a 1984 Extradition Treaty between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana and Republic of Benin which excludes political fugitives from extradition.
