OGUN, PRIVATE FIRM TRAIN WOMEN ON FABRIC EMBELLISHMENT

In a bid to enable more women acquire value-added skills and encourage import substitution in the garment industry, the Ogun State Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in partnership with Tami and Tagoe Ventures have trained women on fabric embellishment.

Commissioner in the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe while speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day empowerment training programme at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the Ministry leveraged on the government’s Public Private Partnership policy, with the aim of galvanising government’s entrepreneurial drive and enhancing the prosperity of the people.

Mrs. Longe noted that training on fabric embellishment  would encourage local production of quality embellished fabrics at cheaper rate, promote import substitution and help generate foreign exchange, through exportation of the product.

She charged the beneficiaries who comprised of women in the fashion business and students to put into practice what they have learnt, so as to harness the abundant opportunities available in the garment industry to their advantage.

" We are determined through our partnership with the Nigerian Promotion Council (NEPC) to provide an enabling environment and support to all beneficiaries of this programme, as well as all entrepreneurs operating in Ogun State with the interest of launching their products into the export market," the Commissioner said.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola charged the beneficiaries to discover and utilise opportunities available through Nigeria's large population rather than concentrating all their efforts on searching for white collar jobs.

Aikulola lauded the initiator of the programme, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Awonusi for imparting knowledge on the participants, calling on the beneficiaries to train others what they have learnt from the programme.

While speaking, Mrs. Awonusi appreciated the Ministry for approving the empowerment programme, stressing that the training focused on increasing the economic power of participants, preparing them to launch their products into the international market and attract investors.

Responding on behalf of other beneficiaries, Miss Jadesola Ogunsola and Tolulope Aina described the programme as an opportunity for them to diversify into a lucrative line of the fashion industry.
