Healthcare practitioners in Ogun State need to adopt strategies that will improve patronage in government-owned facilities, the Chairman of the State’s Hospitals Management Board (HMB), Dr. Kunle Salako has said.
Dr. Salako threw this challenge during a familiarisation visit to some health facilities in Abeokuta Health zone, adding that the Board is working towards adopting a mechanism to identify and groom stakeholders, to lend a helping hand in developing government-owned facilities, as government alone cannot solve challenges in the heath sector.
He noted that a change in behavioral pattern towards patients should be the major strategy to gain their confidence, saying there is need for mandatory training for staffers on appropriate professional behavior and ethics on the overall goal of government in the sector.
"I am truly convinced that when the stakeholders' meetings are held across all our facilities in the State, it will give every citizen a sense of responsibility and ownership, which will lead to increase in patronage and development”, he said.
The Chairman while disclosing that the use of mobile clinics for facilities in remote areas is essential to take healthcare services to the masses, noted that increased patronage by residents would justify government’s commitments in the health sector.
Dr. Salako also revealed that government has been recruiting different professionals and specialists in the sector to enhance service delivery, charging health workers to engage more in medical outreach, to canvass and enlighten the populace on the benefits accruable from the services rendered by the government.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary, HMB, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro solicited support of philanthropists, Non-Governmental Organisations, Donor Agencies and Social Clubs/Associations, towards revamping health facilities across the State, urging healthcare practitioners to justify their pay by being more proactive, saying “to whom much is given, much is expected”.
