Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has reminded Nigerians of the need to work together for the continued peace, unity and development of the country, irrespective of their socio-cultural and political differences.
The Governor who gave the reminder at the Grand finale of this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration held at the Arcade Ground, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said though language and religious leaning may differ, Nigerians should show love to one another, " as our diversity lies in our strength".
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Engr. (Mrs.) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said "at this point, permit me to use this opportunity to remind all Nigerians, that irrespective of our differences, we must work together for the continued unity and development of our dear nation. We have no other place to call home. And, if there is a major take-away we should all have from this important event, it is that we should all embody the spirit of selflessness and sacrifice for our nation, so that our dear country continues on the path of greatness as envisioned by the founding fathers.
"As a matter of fact, we must shun the call for division, insurgence, banditry and all inter-ethnic, religious and politically motivated wrangling. We should embrace team-spirit, brotherliness and compassion for our fellow beings.
He advocated for the use of democratic and appropriate institutions in the processes of seeking redress as whatever could not be achieve through peaceful means, would not be achieve through violence.
The Governor noted that despite the COVID-19 and other global challenges, the Armed Forces have continued to be at the vanguard of the battle against the pandemic and ensuring the internal security by curtailing the activities of the insurgents in many parts of the country.
Abiodun opined that the Remembrance Day was a good opportunity to recollect and reflect on the dogged spirit and the personal sacrifices rendered by the fallen heroes, and the continued role of the Armed Forces in the unity and progress of the nation, adding that the Nigerian Military should be appreciated for its gallantry and loyal service to the country.
"We should also continue to acknowledge and salute the gallantry of the brave men and officers who continue to sacrifice their comfort for the trenches and stand firmly in the pursuit of our peace and unity as a Nation", he added.
The State Governor solicited the collective efforts of the people to ensure the success of ‘Rebuilding our Future Together’ agenda as the administration is committed to giving the State a focused and qualitative governance that would create opportunities for the citizens to thrive.
While sympathising with the families of the fallen heroes, Prince Abiodun appealed to individuals, corporate bodies and organisations to support activities aimed at caring for the injured and the families of the dead, saying, "as Nigerians, we should continue to contribute our quota towards the upkeep and welfare of our Soldiers and their dependants".
