As part of efforts to promote the nutritional status of residents particularly the vulnerable, Ogun State Government says it is poised to sustain the implementation of the four-year Strategic Framework on Nutrition recently developed.
The Secretary, State Committee on Food and Nutrition, Mr. Olugbenga Idowu made this known during an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta, assuring that the document would not suffer a policy somersault.
"The present administration in the State is set to improve the nutritional status of residents throughout their life cycle and to promote the delivery of effective interventions that will ensure adequate nutrition of all ages of people in Ogun State, especially the vulnerable, I can assure you that this strategic frame work will not suffer any policy somersault", Idowu said.
He emphasised that the strategic plan of action was aimed at improving dietary knowledge, attitudes and practices among the populace, adding that it would also contribute to the control of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases such as Diabetes and Obesity.
The Committee scribe stated that the plan of action designed to cover between 2020-2024 was targeted at increasing exclusive breastfeeding rate in the first six months of life to at least 50 percent by 2024 from the current 20.9 percent, adding that it would also reduce childhood wasting to less than five percent by the end of the implementation year.
He highlighted some of the priority areas in the framework to include nutrition and dietary practices, routine weight monitoring, counselling for pregnant and lactating women, strengthening capacity of health workers to adequately offer maternal nutrition, counselling and appropriate management of malnutrition among adolescents and other identified vulnerable.
