We"ll ensure total eradication of domestic, gender based violence- Mrs Abiodun

The wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun has assured the residents in Ogun State of government's unrelenting efforts to render considerable supports towards people-oriented- programmes  to stop domestic and gender based violence in our society.



Mrs Abiodun gave this assurance while commissioning Ota Area command Family Support Unit (FSU)   at the Police Area command in Sango-Ota adding that the centre is first of its kind in Lagos and Ogun state.


"It has been observed that gender based oppression is rampant in our society

. I am optimistic, as the First Lady also the chairperson of the committee set up by Ogun State Government to check the subjugation and oppression of women,there is a stiffer penalty for perpetrators of domestic and gender based violence offenders. we would ensure not only to reduce but total  elimination of such crime in Nigeria.



"I have to advocate for social working coorperations  among Law Enforcement Agencies, Non--Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Stakeholders to combat the menace of gender - based violence and to ensure that all perpetrators are judiciously brought to Justice", she said.



 She commends Ogun state Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun and the Sango/Ota Area Commander, ACP Monday Agbonika, for the laudable efforts to bring  Family Support Unit Project into an enviable position.


The wife Of Ogun State Governor, appealed to every stakeholders in the war against domestic violence to give a robust information on  the victims of domestic and gender based violence, stressing that if such is done in all communities, the perpetrators would think twice before  committing such errorneous crimes. 



Responding, The Area Commander, Ota Division, ACP Monday Agbonika added that there has been several reported cases  of gender based and domestic violence cases in the area adding that he has been successful in building Family Support Unit while in Lagos which had been so effective in curbing domestic and gender violence.


He explained there was need to approach highly placed individuals, corporate bodies, officials of various Ministries to join hands with the police in the area to build a befitting facility for treating gender based  and domestic violence saying the result of the concerted efforts so far is the Family Support Unit in place now.



He appealed to  Ogun State Government to further assist the Ota FSU with a vehicle to compliment the only existing vehicle at the unit describing the Family Support Unit as the upgrade of Juvenile Welfare Center ( JWC).


In her remarks,the wife of the Ogun state Commissioner of Police, Mrs Millicent Abibat Ajogun, on behalf of Police Officers Wives Association, POWA, commends Agbonika for the initiative advising him not to relent in his efforts at making the area a crime free zone.


"The initiative is unique  which could not be compared with what is obtainable in other places", she added.


In his contribution, the Olota of Ota, Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege appealed to Judges in Nigeria to give stiffer punishment to prominent and influential members of the society, not only to serve as deterrent to others, but also check  members of the society from committing domestic and other related crimes. 


Chairman of Ota Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Mr Patrick Oyegbade thanked the Police officers for their efforts pledging to further support the Nigerian Police Force in the area.



Other dignitaries are:Bishop of Anglican Communion, Ota Diocese, Dr Akin Atere,  member of  House of Representatives Ewekoro/Ifo Constituency, Hon Isiaka Ibrahim, Onitetiku of Owode -Ota, Oba Wasiu Ogungbayi and Onijana of Ijana -Ota,Oba Kenneth  Adeyemi amongst others.
