'EMBER' MONTH: FRSC preaches 'Drive Safe-Stay Safe, offers free medical screening in Ogun

 Hundreds of commercial drivers and less privileged within Ogun State last Wednesday benefited from a free medical outreach organised by Itori Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as part of activities to flag off the Command's 'ember' month campaign.




The medical outreach involves eye tests, blood pressure, sugar level and diabetes screenings. 

The campaign theme was: "Drive Safe, Stay Safe"


Speaking at the event, the Ogun State Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commander Ahmed Umar, debunked the rumour by Nigerians that the last four months of the year–September, October, November and December (Ember months) – are accident months.




He opined that it was the recklessness of drivers that made the rate of road crashes higher during the last four months of the year.

CC Umar ably represented by Deputy Corps Commander Sunday Adelaja Ogungbemi, identified disobedience to the traffic rules and regulations by road users as a cause of many of the crashes on Nigerian roads.

He appealed to road users especially the motorists to shun driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, wrongful overtaking, all form of distractions while on the wheel. 




He also said all motorists are expected to drive carefully with good tyres, well maintained vehicles, prescribed speed limits and avoid lane indiscipline, adding that all the tagged demons will died natural death if all traffic rules and regulations are well observed while on the wheel.

In his welcome address, the Acting Unit Commander, CRC Augustine Ikwue, said there was no evil attached to the  months that increased accident rate. He noted that 'ember' months usually come with increased in both human and vehicular movements which it's attendant could easily cause traffic crashes if necessary precautions to failed.

He said FRSC, being a leading agency in traffic administration and management have over years adopted 'ember' month campaign as yearly tradition to educate road users the importance of obeying traffic rules while using the road.



He emphasised that the Command since the beginning of this year 2020 recorded reduction of traffic crashes due to some measures adopted which include rigorous public enlightenment in religious homes, motor parks, schools among others.

The Kabiyesi Onipapa of Papaland, Oba AbdulRasak Jimoh Famuyiwa, who spoke in Yoruba dialect for better understanding to those who didn't understand English and other languages, urges the motorists to always remember that they left wife children, children, relatives who are waiting for their arrivals whenever they are behind the steering.

The Kabiyesi appealed to FRSC to double efforts in road safety campaigns across all motor parks with full enforcement. He noted that nothing bad if the Corps prosecute any erring motorists who refused to obey traffic rules.

In attendance were: Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Police, NAFDAC, TRACE, IMMIGRATION, Transport Union leaders, traditional rules among others.
