For many days penultimate week, the social and traditional media buzzed with juicy reports on the last moments of the late maximum ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha. DSS @ 40: My Journey Behind the Shield, a book written by Dennis Amachree, a retired DSS chief involved in the arrest and interrogation of the people allegedly in the know of the circumstances in which the late dictator died, provided a fresh perspective that countered the narratives in the public domain to the effect that he died from eating an apple provided by two Indian mistresses that stormed the precincts of Aso Rock presidential Villa for a frolicking session with the nation’s number one man.

Amachree’s book, however, revealed that both the Indian ladies tale and the one invented by Abacha’s former Chief Security Officer (CSO), Hamza Al-Mustapha, that Abcha’s death resulted from a handshake with a bodyguard of the leader of Palestinian Liberation Organisation Yasser Arafat who had visited the late head of state a day before his death were concocted in an effort to extenuate the embarrassment that would arise from the true account, which is that Abacha passed on in the middle of a hot session with a youthful Igbo pharmacist brought in by her elder sister and Abacha’s mistress for a bite of the maximum ruler’s sugar cane.

Excited perhaps by the beauty and youthfulness of his new prey, Abacha took the frolicking session into an overdrive, the life support machine on which his life depended snapped and he breathed his last.

But the Abacha story is not a lone incident in power circles. His only became public knowledge because of the tragic and dramatic way it ended. Sentry’s investigation revealed that government houses at state and even at local government levels are not less involved in the kind of conjugal venture that terminated Abacha’s life.
