Democracy Day: Sanwo-Olu Urges Unity, Active Citizenship as Nigeria Marks 27 Years of Democratic Rule
LAGOS, June 12, 2026 — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has called on Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, unity, and responsible citizenship as the nation commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a message marking the occasion, the governor described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria's democratic journey, noting that it symbolizes the courage, sacrifice, and determination of citizens who fought to ensure that the voices of the people would be heard and respected.
Sanwo-Olu paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, his wife, the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.
According to him, Democracy Day serves as a powerful reminder that freedom, justice, and democratic governance were secured through the resilience and unwavering commitment of patriots who believed in a better future for the country.
“As we celebrate the enduring spirit of a people who chose democracy and stood firm in its defence, we must honour those whose sacrifices helped shape the democratic nation we proudly call home,” the governor stated.
Reflecting on Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, Sanwo-Olu urged citizens to continue promoting the values that strengthen democracy, including accountability, mutual respect, civic participation, and national unity.
He emphasized that democracy thrives when citizens actively engage in governance and hold leaders accountable while contributing positively to societal development.
The governor also highlighted Lagos State's rich cultural and ethnic diversity, describing it as one of the state's greatest assets. He called on residents to continue fostering peaceful coexistence, understanding, and collaboration across communities.
“In Lagos State, our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths. Let us continue to work together in unity and mutual respect, building a society where every citizen has the opportunity to contribute and thrive,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and resilient Lagos, while encouraging residents to remain steadfast in supporting democratic institutions and the collective quest for national progress.
The governor wished Lagosians and Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration, expressing optimism that the country's democratic journey would continue to yield greater dividends for all citizens.
