NCC Inaugurates National IPv6 Council to Drive Nigeria’s Digital Future
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated the National Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Council as part of efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to next-generation internet infrastructure.

inauguration ceremony, held at the Marriott Hotel Ikeja on April 23, 2026, brought together key stakeholders from the telecommunications and internet ecosystem to strengthen collaboration and policy direction for IPv6 adoption in the country.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Aminu Maida, underscored the importance of IPv6 in sustaining Nigeria’s digital economy. He noted that the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is critical to addressing the growing demand for internet connectivity, enhancing network efficiency, and supporting emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT).
Maida emphasised that the newly inaugurated council would play a strategic role in coordinating national efforts, raising awareness, and facilitating the deployment of IPv6 across sectors.
Also speaking, the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services at the NCC, Abraham Oshadami, highlighted the technical imperatives of adopting IPv6, noting that the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses makes migration inevitable for Nigeria to remain competitive in the global digital landscape.
The National President of the IPv6 Council, Muhammed Rudman, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s internet development journey. He pledged the council’s commitment to driving stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and capacity building to ensure a smooth transition to IPv6.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Tony Emoekpere, Council Member; Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management; Chris Uwaje, National Vice President of the IPv6 Council; and Adesola Akinsanya, President of the National Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and Council Member.
The inauguration of the IPv6 Council is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s internet governance framework and position the country for improved digital innovation, scalability, and global competitiveness.
