The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper collaboration aimed at strengthening the country’s telecommunications ecosystem and accelerating digital connectivity nationwide.
This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by ATCON members to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday, February 17, 2026.
The visit brought together top officials of the telecoms regulator and industry stakeholders, highlighting ongoing efforts to address sectoral challenges, improve service delivery and expand broadband penetration across the country.
Speaking during the engagement, the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between the regulator and operators in achieving national digital transformation goals. He noted that Nigeria’s telecommunications sector remains a critical enabler of economic growth, innovation and financial inclusion.
Maida explained that the Commission is committed to creating a stable and transparent regulatory environment that encourages investment, protects consumers and supports operators in deploying infrastructure, especially in underserved and rural communities.
He also emphasised the need for collective action in tackling industry challenges such as infrastructure protection, right-of-way bottlenecks and rising operational costs, which continue to impact service quality and network expansion.
In his remarks, President of ATCON, Mr. Tony Emoekpere, commended the NCC for its open-door policy and continuous engagement with stakeholders. He described the Commission as a responsive regulator and pledged the association’s readiness to work closely with the NCC to advance policies that will promote sustainable industry growth.
Emoekpere noted that operators are prepared to support initiatives that will improve broadband access, enhance network resilience and drive Nigeria’s digital economy. He added that stronger collaboration would help address infrastructure vandalism, multiple taxation and other operational constraints affecting telecom companies.
Also present at the meeting were the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, NCC, Engr. Abraham Oshadami; Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, NCC, Mrs. Rimini Makama; and Vice President of ATCON and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), Mr. Muhammed Rudman, among other senior officials.
Both parties agreed to sustain regular consultations and technical engagements to ensure the continued development of a robust, reliable and inclusive telecommunications sector capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing digital ambitions.
