The Ogun State Government has reinforced its commitment to quality education with the induction of a new set of school administrators in Secondary Schools across the State.

The induction ceremony has 247 Principals and 316 Vice Principals, who took Oath of Allegiance, at Baptist Boys’ High School, Saje, Abeokuta.

Speaking at the event, TESCOM Chairman, Apostle ’Biodun Sanyaolu,  who reaffirmed that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration remains committed to standard and quality education under its 'ISEYA' mantra, stressed that effective school administration and teaching delivery were central to the government’s education policy, adding that TESCOM would continue to prioritise training, retraining, and the welfare of teaching and non-teaching staff.

“TESCOM, as the agency that oversees the teaching workforce, will consistently uphold professional ethics, equity, and fairness while rewarding outstanding performance,” he stated.

Apostle Sanyaolu charged the new Principals and Vice Principals to ensure full implementation of government policies on education, drive academic excellence, and positively impact the lives of learners.

“As you take on this responsibility, I urge you to embrace collaboration, communication, and innovation. Work closely with teachers, staff, and students to improve schools, promote excellence, and foster a positive learning culture,” he added.

In their goodwill messages, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evang. Olalekan Ifede; the President of the All Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr. Adeniyi Adekoya; and the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Noah Sewakanu, congratulated the inductees on their elevation, encouraging them to promote teamwork and strengthen relationships with parents and communities in their respective schools.

Responding on behalf of the inductees, Mrs. Oluyemisi Ayinde and Mr. Inua Olagesin (Principals), alongside Mr. Ope Sodimu and Mrs. Olaoluwa Osinuga (Vice Principals), expressed gratitude to the State Government and TESCOM for the opportunity to serve, and pledging to be diligent and efficient in their new roles.

Highlight of the ceremony was the decoration of TESCOM Chairman, Apostle Sanyaolu, as an Ambassador of School Crime Prevention by the National School Crime Prevention Corps (NSCPC).

OGSG WARNS AGAINST DIVERSE SCHOOL UNIFORMS, INDISCRIMINATE CHANGE OF TEXTBOOKS

Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has warned that no school in the State, either public or private is allowed to use more than one school uniform, there should not be indiscriminate change of textbooks and any school found over-riding the policy shall be heavily sanctioned.

The Commissioner in the Ministry, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu who gave this warning in Abeokuta during the 2025/2026 academic session pre-resumption media engagement, said text books can be passed to siblings so far it is still within the year of review by the Ministry and that no two uniforms is allowed except for sport wears.

Prof. Arigbabu also frowned at some so called "big schools" abandoning Nigerian curriculum for foreign ones to desist from it, hence their license will be seized, positing that no foreign curriculum was presented during approval process.

He mentioned that, henceforth there should not be graduation from nursery classes to primary one, but a moderate ceremony without any tone of extortion was approved for learners moving from Pry 6 to JS1, JS 3 to SS1 and SS3, adding that no child should be deprived access to education on the account of burdensome fees.

Arigbabu reminded Principals and Headteachers of Public Primary and Secondary Schools that the present administration in the State is running a free education policy, thus, it becomes a criminal act for any school to make charges under whatever disguise, noting that anyone caught will be severely dealt with.

The Commissioner, while appreciating the private school owners for the support towards providing quality education for learner across the State, urged them to diligently run their activities with full compliance to the government policies.


OGSG WARNS SCHOOL HEADS AGAINST ILLEGAL COLLECTION OF FEES

Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has once again warned  Principals and Headteachers of Public Secondary and Primary Schools across the State, against illegal collections of fees in any form, reiterating that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration is strictly committed to free and quality standard of education.

The Commissioner in the Ministry, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu emphasised this in Abeokuta, during the Pre-resumption Stakeholders Meeting with School Administrators in the State, charging them to dissipate more passion towards ensuring the aim of the Government to sustain the enviable standards of education is not jeopardised.

Prof. Arigbabu said Principals of Flagship Secondary Schools should not admit more than 60 learners in a classroom to make teaching and learning conducive, enjoining others to work cooperatively and effectively with their School Portal Administrators for efficient school management.

"Things have changed technologically and you need to help yourself by ensuring proper upgrade. Have checking ability, be firm, vigilant and develop native intelligence in dealing with the teachers", the Commissioner noted

In his remarks, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, DIG Olusola Subair (Rtd) led other security agencies to orientate the schools’ heads on the need to secure their schools by being proactive, ensuring thorough patrol of their schools, making quick response to emergency and supervising their teachers and learners against security breaches.

Speaking,  Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Apostle Abiodun Sanyaolu and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evang. Olalekan Ifede described teachers as life moulders and they must do it with passion, love and total commitment, not forgetting the commitment of the present administration to their welfare.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko underscore that the Stakeholders Engagement was to charge Principals and Headteachers on the expectations of the government from them, urging them to listen to the Commissioner's charge with rapt attention.

The State President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr. Adeyinka Adekoya and Chairperson, Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) in Ogun State, Mrs. Folake Onabajo appreciated Governor Abiodun for appointing a resourceful, passion driven personality to paddle the canoe of education in the State to a successful haven, promising further support for   government programmes.

OGUN SUBEB INDUCTS 156 HEADTEACHERS

The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has inducted 156 headteachers drawn from across the three Senatorial districts of the State.

Speaking at the induction ceremony at NUT Hall, Kuto, Abeokuta, Chairman, Ogun SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, said the elevation of the inductees was not only a recognition of their past dedication and commitment but also a call to greater responsibility and service in shaping the future of learners and education system.

 “Headship is a position of trust, leadership, and stewardship. As the Head of a School, you are not only an administrator but also a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration to both teachers and pupils. Your role is pivotal in driving the vision of government towards raising the standard of basic education in Ogun State,” Ifede stated.

He stressed that one of their foremost responsibilities was to ensure that learners in public primary schools acquire the fundamental skills of reading and writing, describing them as the bedrock of all learning.

 “A child who cannot read and write effectively will struggle in every other subject,” he affirmed.

The Chairman further enjoined the new headteachers to implement strategies that would promote literacy, such as organising reading clubs, encouraging class libraries, monitoring teachers’ lesson delivery and ensuring no child is left behind.

He advised them to supervise teachers effectively by ensuring punctuality, discipline, and classroom management, while fostering an atmosphere of collaboration.

 “Supervision should not be about fault-finding alone, but about guidance, mentoring, and continuous improvement,” he added.

Also speaking, Permanent Member IV of the Board, Rt. Hon. Akeem Balogun, charged the inductees to build strong relationships with host communities by engaging opinion leaders, old students, philanthropists, and other stakeholders in pursuit of educational development.

In his goodwill message, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Noah Sewakanu, urged the inductees to shun rivalry, comparison and witch-hunting, advising them to use their new positions to encourage, motivate and correct with love.

Delivering a lecture on The Vision and Mission of the School, the retired Director of Quality Assurance and resource person at the event, Mr. Segun Alade, stressed the importance of having a clear vision and mission, with strong community engagement to guide school development.

The Chairman of the Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (APSHON), Ogun State Chapter, Comrade (Mrs.) Folake Onabajo, represented by the Secretary, Comrade Olabode Oladele, also charged the inductees to lead with integrity, fairness and dedication. She urged them to work in unity with their teachers, inspire learners, and foster cordial relationships with parents and stakeholders.

Responding on behalf of the inductees, Mrs. Toyin Olubunmi from Egba and Mr. Ebenezer Ojeleye from Yewa Divisions expressed gratitude to the Board for the recognition and promised to discharge their duties diligently.

IMPORTANCE OF JOLLY PHONICS IN BASIC EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTED

The Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, has underscored the importance of Jolly Phonics in public primary schools across the State, describing it as a practical skill that equips pupils with the ability to decode and pronounce words using letter sounds, thereby making reading easier at the early learning stage.

Ifede made this known during a 3-day capacity-building workshop jointly organised by Ogun SUBEB and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), at Imo Methodist Nursery and Primary School, Oke-Yeke, Abeokuta.

The workshop, themed “Improving Teachers’ Capacity and Competence in Teaching Phonics and Reading”, was designed to strengthen teachers’ skills in the teaching of phonics and reading.

He described the programme as a timely intervention to boost foundational literacy in basic schools across the state, noting that the Jolly Phonics approach, which emphasised phonemic awareness, has been proven effective in addressing reading difficulties among young learners.

 “If you teach the pupils wrong pronunciation, they will carry that along with them. After this training, we are going to monitor you closely as you teach the pupils,” Ifede cautioned.

The SUBEB Chairman urged participants to treat the workshop as a valuable opportunity, pay close attention and apply the techniques to improve pupils’ reading, communication and handwriting skills. He further encouraged teachers to master proper pronunciation, cascade the training to colleagues and uphold professional conduct.

 “I am a beneficiary of what you are being taught today because I use it myself. It works, and I can confirm that to anybody. Knowing phonics is an asset,” he added.

Also speaking, Project Manager of Jolly Phonics in Ogun State, Mr. Seyi Alake, explained that the programme adopted a multi-sensory approach designed to help pupils read and write with confidence, using synthetic phonics. He urged teachers to ensure effective implementation of the method in their classrooms.

In her response on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Kudirat Jimoh-Taiwo of Our Lady of Apostles Nursery and Primary School, Ibara, Abeokuta South Local Government, commended the Board for organising the training, promising to cascade the knowledge gained to colleagues in their various schools.

The workshop was held simultaneously across the four divisions of Ogun State.



SCHOOL RESUMPTION: TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS CHARGED ON PUNCTUALITY, DISCIPLINE

Towards ensuring efficient service delivery for the 2025/2026 Academic session, teachers and school administrators across Ogun State have been charged on punctuality and discipline.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu gave the charge at day two of 3-day pre-resumption stakeholders' meeting at Lisabi Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, saying teachers should exhibit habits which learners could benefit from.

Prof. Arigbabu revealed that the government would be engaging teachers in series of trainings and capacity building programmes which would improve their teaching skills and services delivery.

He also appreciated associations of private school owners for their usual support and adherence to government policies and procedures, while seeking more cooperation to ensure ‘out-of-school children’ challenge become a thing of the past in the State.

"I am happy that teachers now understand better how to discipline learners in school not with the usual way they’ve been doing it in the past, you should rather be a role model with displaying habits they can emulate," Arigbabu advised.

Speaking earlier, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko emphasised the need for stakeholders to ensure every bit of the discussion are passed to others for strict adherence in various schools.

On their part, Chairman, NUT Ogun State, Comrade Noah Sewakanu represented by the Union Secretary, Comrade Samson Oyelere and Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary School, Comrade Felix Agbesanwa, commended the Commissioner for initiating such valuable platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss critical issues which would take the educational sector of the State to an enviable height.

In their separate remarks, President General, Grand Union of Proprietors Association, Alh. Jabar Adebola and President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Ogun State Chapter, Otunba Joshua Osibeluwo applauded the present administration for its developmental and transformative policies as well as initiatives that had elevated the standard of education, ensuring that every child, regardless of background have access to quality education.
