FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER: OGSG CONCLUDES GROUNDBREAKING TECHNICAL CURRICULUM REVIEW
Ogun State has reaffirmed its leadership in technical and vocational education with the successful conclusion of a five-day workshop on the Critique and Validation of Six National Occupational Standards and the Final Critique for Five National Technical Certificates (NTC).
This was disclosed by Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odusi, the Project Coordinator, Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), during the closing ceremony held at Continental Suites, Ibara, Abeokuta.
She affirmed that the review brought together education leaders, industry stakeholders, and curriculum experts to endorse updated technical curricula designed to meet modern industry demands and boost youth employability.
Mrs. Owo-Odusi noted that the workshop was jointly organised by the Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and OGSTEP, a World Bank sponsored initiative committed to enhancing human capital development.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Alhaja Mariam Oloko, represented by the Director of Curriculum Development and Evaluation, Mr. Tope Lasilo, commended the facilitators and participants for their active engagement throughout the workshop.
In his remarks, NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Garji, represented by Dr. Musa Koko, Director of Curriculum, commended the resource teams for their dedication to curriculum research and development. He noted that the updated curricula were tailored to industry needs, with the potential to generate employment and positively impact Ogun State’s economy.
Acting Executive Secretary of OGSTVEB, Mrs. Mojisola Adenowo, expressed gratitude to the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun for prioritising technical and vocational education, pointed out that the successful review of the new trades would enhance development in Ogun State and across Nigeria, while appreciating all participants for their contributions to the workshop’s success.
TVET Specialist Consultant, OGSTEP, Mr. Unyime Eyo, highlighted that in the past five years, OGSTEP, in collaboration with the World Bank and OGSTVEB, has focused on institutional development, which includes partnerships with over 500 industries, the physical rehabilitation of all eight technical colleges in the state, the provision of ICT and modern laboratories, training for over 17,000 artisans, and digital capacity-building for teachers.
In their separate presentations, Chairmen of the five newly reviewed trades — Mr. Kazim Bello (Crop Production Craft), Dr. Comfort Mado-Alabi (Fashion and Textile Machine Maintenance/Repair Craft), Dr. Hindatu Idris-Umar (Embellishment Craft), Prof. Fakorede Saheed (Mechatronics Craft), and Dr. Akinwumi Alonge (Ornamental Building Craft) ,stated that the revised curricula would be 70% practical and 30% theory, emphasisng that this shift ensures students will gain hands-on skills directly applicable to modern industry and entrepreneurship.
