OGSG SEALS STEEL COMPANY OVER EXPLOSION

Ogun State government has sealed up Phoenix Steel Mills Industries Limited, Ogijo in Sagamu Local Government with immediate effect, following a gas explosion in the factory.


Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya announced closure of the iron rod manufacturing industry during an on-the-spot assessment of the explosion area, which affected almost the production line of the company.

Oresanya disclosed that government would conduct a thorough investigation on the remote and immediate cause of the explosion, towards preventing future occurrence, adding that the investigation would spell out in clear terms, the condition under which the company should operate, so that its workers, immediate communities and property could be adequately protected.

He said in order to forestall further industrial accidents in the state, government would upscale and establish a Safety Desk, in form of an agency under the Ministry of Environment, saddled with the responsibilities of Health and Safety Matters.

"This is necessary because the state government believes that preservation of lives and property starts from prevention and safety matters. So we are going to step up our game when it comes to health and safety matters, especially when it comes to industrial production and activities, even in construction industries and make sure that people comply with the minimum and basic health and safety standards before they        operate in the state", he said.

The Commissioner urged industries in the state to conform with the new Health and Safety standards when fully implemented, as anyone who fails to conform would be sanctioned, calling on all Community Development Associations, who he described as first responders to any accident, to monitor all industries in their area for compliance,

Seven workers of the industry were seriously injured in the explosion and currently in an hospital at Ikorodu.

INDIGENES TASKED ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

Indigenes of Ogun State both at home and in the Diaspora have been called upon to ensure they contribute their quota to the overall growth of their various communities and the state at large, especially in the area of youth development.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, made the call while fielding questions from journalists at the grand finale of the 37th Lisabi Festival, with the theme, "Encouraging Youth Entrepreneurship in the Agribusiness: A Panacea To Solving Youths Unemployment in Egbaland", at Ake Palace ground in Abeokuta.

Hon. Fagbayi, who commended the organisers of the festival and indigenes for adding glamour to the cultural festival through educational scholarships to indigent youths of Egbaland, said it was an indication that they were in tandem with the present administration's youth-friendly posture of assisting youth farmers and entrepreneurs in the state.

"The festival is truly cultural and colourful with a lot of economic benefits to the people and the state at large. Most business around this area witnessed more turnover since the event started a week ago and even the State. I want to give kudos to the indigenes in diaspora for the scholarships given to the indigenes, especially the youths, up to N2m cash donations, as well as encouraging agricprenuers, which add colour to the glamour. I want to implore the indigenes to keep supporting the government", he said.

Speaking, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, explained that promoting education and entrepreneurship among Youths was key to Egba indigenes, hence the theme for the year.

He highlighted the significance of the Lisabi Festival, which include, uniting the people, promoting selflessness and leadership qualities, as well as a platform to celebrate achievements, honour exemplary individuals and foster unity among Egba sons and daughters both at home and abroad.

The Alake appreciated the present administration for its commitment to tackling economic challenges being experienced in recent time, through various empowerment programmes and interventions, advising the youth to take advantage of the just commissioned Adire shared facility in Asero to improve themselves.

The Festival showcased the culture and tradition of Egbaland and people, ranging from the attires of different groups, acrobatic dance steps, traditional songs and group performances, as well as displays.

IMBIBE SPIRIT OF HARD WORK, GOOD MORALS, COMMISSIONER URGES OFFICERS

Staffers of Ogun State Ministry of Housing have been charged to imbibe the spirit of hard work and cultivate good morals in the discharge of their duties.

Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Akande Omoniyi, made the charge at the send-off programme organised by the Ministry, in honour of a retired Director, Arc. Sulaimon Oladipo and two others, Mrs. Rebecca Omobola Sodiya and Mr. Rahmoni Akinpelu.

 Jagunmolu Omoniyi, who underscored the importance of being diligent and transparent in the Civil Service, appreciated the retired officers for their innovation, support and loyalty, praying for favour wherever they go after the retirement.

He enjoined officers to emulate their good work, to enable them to have a successful career.

In his remarks, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engr. Muritala Adekunle, commended the dedication and excellent contributions of the retiring officers during their active service, particularly in the agency.

"Though dedication and passion for hard work of retiring officers have not only achieved remarkable success in their endeavours, but also fostered a culture of collaboration, innovation and mutual respect within the Ministry", he said.

Responding on behalf of other retirees, Arc. Oladipo, expressed delight at the Ministry’s support towards their careers, promising to forever cherish the staff and management of the agency for the cordial relationship enjoyed while in service and prayed for continuous love and greater achievements in the Ministry.

             OGUN SENSITISES PROSPECTIVE HAJJ PILGRIMS

In its bid to ensure a seamless 2024 Hajj exercise, Ogun State government, through the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, has commenced enlightenment programmes for intending pilgrims on Hajj rites and how to be of good behaviour by eschewing acts that could bring the state into disrepute during the pilgrimage.

 Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Dauda Salau stated this during the first phase of lecture/enlightenment programme organised for the intending pilgrims, at the Board's Office in Abeokuta, saying the annual would enable the pilgrims to be conversant with regulations guiding the holy land of Mecca and Medinnah.

Alhaji Salau urged intending pilgrims to take advantage of the exercise to enhance their Islamic knowledge on Hajj rites and proper guidance to reap the full benefits of the pilgrimage.

Earlier, Consultant to the Governor on Religious Affairs, Sheik Iskeel Lawal, reminded them that Hajj, as a serious exercise should not be for a jamboree but to serve Almighty Allah, urging pilgrims to pray for peace and tranquillity in Nigeria.

In their separate lectures, the guest lecturers, Imam Abdul-Razaq Abdul-Azeez and Sheik Fatih Adesina, charged intending pilgrims to fear Allah, sustain their faith, be focused, adhere strictly to the directive of the officials and abstain from activities that could negate the principles of Hajj.

Contributing, a medical expert, Dr. Nasr'deen Bello, urged the pilgrims to take their medications along and use them as prescribed, always drink enough water to prevent dehydration, just as he warned them against going out in the scorching sun.

Similarly, an official from National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Iyanda Adebayo, admonished the pilgrims on illicit drug use and peddling during their stay in Saudi Arabia.

While demonstrating the practical aspect of how to dress during the Hajj rites, Head of Operations in the Board, Imam Abdul Fatai Buhari, educated the intending pilgrims on the rules and regulations of the Hajj operations. 

Appreciating the Board on behalf of other intending pilgrims, Alhaji Kazeem Ayangbola and Alhaja Tawakalitu Kazeem, gave kudos to government for the educative and informative programmes put together for them, promising to conduct themselves properly and be of good ambassadors throughout their stay in Saudi Arabia.

BUREAU HOLDS GROOMING TRAINING WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY

A two-day grooming training for selected officers on GL 12 - 14 from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, organised by Ogun State government, through the Bureau of Establishments and Training, Office of the Head of Service, will hold from Wednesday, March 13 to Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 9 am each day.

A release signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Bureau, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo, indicated that the training with the theme, "Optimising Public Service Excellence", would take place at Obas’ Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

It added that Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, would declare the training open, enjoining participants to be seated at least 30 minutes before the commencement of the programme.
