Depending on the establishment and if you’re lucky enough, the cell will have an in cell phone so that you can call home. Upon arrival to the prison you should have also been given emergency phone credit which contains about £5 of phone credit so that you can call home.

Its minimal at best, usually has a bunk bed attached to the wall, a few cupboards screwed to the wall, a kettle, TV and most have a sink and toilet behind the bunk bed.

The bed itself is uncomfortable and the thin, well used, prison mattress (like a gym crash matt) takes some getting used to.

I put my towels and sheets under the mattress to plump it up. It can feel claustrophobic at first as you get used to the 6ft by 8ft space and going to the toilet with someone in the same room can feel odd at first, but something you have no choice over.

You will learn to adapt to sleep in whatever environment!
