JUST IN: Military Helicopter Crashes
According to the defense ministry, three people were killed when a Nigerien military helicopter crashed on its way back from a routine training flight on Monday.
The crash occurred while the Russian-built Mi-17 was landing at Niamey airport for a military base.
“Unfortunately, all three crewmembers – a Nigerien officer and NCO and an expatriate instructor – died immediately despite efforts by rescue services to put out the fire,” it said in a statement.

According to the statement, an investigation has been launched.
Niger, the world’s poorest country according to the UN’s Human Development Index (HDI), has pledged to strengthen its military in the face of jihadist insurgencies in the country’s southwest and southeast.
France and the United States, which have major air bases in Niger, as well as Belgium, Italy, and Germany, are providing training and logistical support to the country.
Separately, the defense ministry announced Monday that “25 terrorists” were killed last week “in an air strike” in the western region of Tillaberi.
