The Ogun State Government in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Health and other development partners have chat a course with a view to providing the road map timeline for taking the health sector to an enviable destination.
Towards achieving the feat, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, while declaring open a 5-day workshop on the Annual Operational Plan (AOP), of the health sector for the year 2021 in Abeokuta, said the gathering was the first of its kind since the State Strategic Health Development Plan (SSHDP II), was initiated for 2018-2022 by the Federal Ministry of Health, to improve the health status of residents of the State.
Coker said keying into the AOP, would afford the State the opportunity of scaling up effective service coverage, coordinate support for health and increase domestic health financing, hence taking advantage of the SSHDP II five-year plan.
She noted that the State recently constituted and inaugurated its Monitoring and Technical Working Group (TWG), to provide successful implementation of SSHDP II.
"The Prince Dapo Abiodun led government indeed has the political will to reposition the sector by coming up with this type of workshop in order to leverage the benefits of the SSHDP II. With this Annual Operational Plan for the coming year, we are sure that we will be better for it.
"We need to design a way forward to achieve the goals set for 2018 to date so that by 2022, we would have done a lot on the plan," she said.
Coker said there were 50 areas of interventions in the plan which include, Maternal and Child Health as well as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, tuberculosis, family planning uptake, immunisation and infrastructure, among others, which the State would pursue vigorously without leaving any stone unturned.
The Commissioner charged the heads of various agencies and departments in the health sector to brace up in the pursuit of the plan, adding that everyone is important in its implementation.
In his remarks, the Head, Planning Research and Statistics (PRS), Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Angus Ikpe, commended the Commissioner for ensuring that the AOP workshop becomes a reality, pointing out that the plan would support the efforts of the sector in the coming year.
